Take a Tour with Us
Laura, the owner would be delighted to take you on a private tour of the winery.
She will take you through the whole winemaking process, starting in the vineyard with growing the grapes, through to how we make the wines and a look at oak barrel aging.
This personal tour will reflect your interests and answer all your questions about what it’s like to live and work on a vineyard!
You’ll get an insight into Derek’s meticulous attention to each and every detail of the winemaking and understand how our wines reflect the terroir of our vineyard and the variations of each vintage.
Tasting older vintages of wines
Often people laugh when we talk about ageing wine and it is especially challenging to age wine in WA with our big difference in minimum and maximum temperatures, let alone the fact that if you’ve nothing to drink today, you won’t be ageing anything!
The cooler Winter months are a great opportunity to try a few older wines at Upper Reach, taste how the flavours develop and integrate over time. Tannins mellow out in the bigger red styles (such as our Shiraz), whereas in the white wines you can taste how the acidity softens and the wines become richer and more intense.
Each vintage we reserve a portion of the best wines to age in the Winemaker’s Cellar.
The wines in the Winemaker’s Cellar are those that benefit from ageing, they are left to mature, but periodically we taste and evaluate them (a hard job, but someone’s got to do it). We’ll open up our older vintages, when we think that they are drinking perfectly!
We’ve aged the wine for you, at our Cellar Door you can get hold of otherwise unattainable wines, perfectly cellared, aged and ready to drink now; take a couple home for that special dinner!
